If you are the proud owner of a Honda mower, you may have realized that you are the owner of a well-engineered machine that experiences very few issues, providing that you properly maintain it. One of the most important maintenance tasks that you need to undertake is a tune up; fortunately, this process is so simple that all owners should be able to complete it with ease.
Step 1: Place an old pan underneath the mower and remove the crankcase drain plug. This will allow all of the old oil to drain out of the machine without getting it all over your driveway or grass.
Step 2: Remove the air cleaner’s cover (it should be held in place with some plastic tabs) and replace the filter. Gently depress the tabs when removing the cover to prevent breaking them.
Step 3: Blow a steady stream of air around the base of the spark plug to remove any dirt that has built up before removing the plug completely. Coat the threads of a new spark plug with an anti-seize substance and screw into place.
Never force the spark plug into the cylinder head, as this can completely destroy it and leads to expensive repairs. Instead, if the plug doesn’t easily fit, take it out and try again.
Step 4: Put the drain plug back into the crankcase and refill it with oil. Make sure that you use the brand or type of oil specified in your Honda mower owner’s manual to avoid any issues.
Step 5: Use compressed air to blow away any debris that may have accumulated on the engine’s cooling fins. This will prevent the engine from overheating as you push it around your property.
Once you have finished giving your Honda mower a tune up, it should be ready and raring to go for another few months before it needs more attention. As a part of this maintenance, you should also remove the blades once a year and have them sharpened. This will ensure that the mower slices through your grass instead of tearing it, which can be highly damaging.
